Twenty Folk Art Watercolor Theatrical Portraits, attributed to Charles Shoettel, New York, early to mid-19th century, the portraits of varying size depicting notable actors in theatrical roles throughout the early and mid-19th century New York theater scene, including Josef Staudigl as Caspar in the opera Der Freischutz, Thomas Copper as Rhoderick Dhu in Lady of the Lake, Donna Lola Montez in El Olavo, a scene from the play of the King of the Commons, and a scene inscribed "Lord Clifford overthrowing Richard Duke of York, the Battle of Wakefield.," (imperfections).
Notes: These watercolors were found in the album of Charles Shoettel, and was bound by John Walker, of New York City. The album was passed down by members of John D. Ottiwell's family. Ottiwell served in the 7th regiment of NYC volunteers and was a delegate to the 1868 Republican Convention. The album remained the property of the family until April 2002.
