In the July 3, 1851 edition of the Milwaukee Sentinel, the editor, after visiting Torrey's studio, noted "landscapes, hunting pieces and other paintings," among the artist´s works. Torrey returned to Pennsylvania in 1853 and in 1856--the same year this work was painted and exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Torrey married for a second time in 1862, and had a son who was born in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1870. The only painting to come to market is Indians in a Wooded Landscape, an oil on canvas that achieved $25,850 in 2003.
