label on the frame, with a Berlin, Germany, conservator's label dated 1890, a partial typed label identifying the subject, a partial paper label inscribed "W.D. Foulke," and an unidentified red wax collector's stamp on the reverse.
Oil on panel, 12 7/8 x 10 in. (32.8 x 25.4 cm),framed.
Condition: Areas of skinning, craquelure, scattered abrasions, surface grime.
Estimate $7,000-9,000
The partial typed label on the reverse, written in English, suggests that this work is not by Cranach himself but by another painter of the same period. There is a fourth paper label on the reverse which is too darkened to read. An unidentified red wax collector's stamp and another partial red wax stamp also on the reverse.
Under UV the overall surface appears milky white. There are scattered dots of retouch along the edge of the nose and along the figure's right cheek. There is a larger area of retouch in the shadows of her left cheek. Touches of retouch throughout the clothes. Vertical craquelure and surface imperfections. It would appear that there are prior restorations done early enough that they do not fluoresce.
