N.B. Lichtenstein's Cathedral series was one of two created in homage to French Impressionist Claude Monet. The other was his Haystack series, also of 1969. Like Monet, Lichtenstein depicts the façade of Rouen Cathedral. Unlike Monet, each of Lichtenstein's prints uses precisely the same image printed in different colorways. Both artists ultimately create a series of façades depicted at different times of day. Where Monet uses his ubiquitous loose Impressionistic brush strokes, Lichtenstein replaces these with his ubiquitous Ben-Day dots.
Estimate $6,000-8,000
Due to extensive framing and the scale of the print, it cannot be fully examined out of the frame. However, the frame was opened at three corners revealing that the print is unmounted; it is attached to the backing board with paper corners. The print is not trimmed or cut, the sheet measures approximately 48 1/2 x 33 1/2 in. There appears to be no fading.
