Black Silk Formal Court Robe, China, 19th/20th century, with horseshoe sleeves and a box pleated skirt, embroidered with large roundels across the chest, shoulders, and back, each depicting a five-clawed dragon coiled around a flaming pearl surrounded by clouds and a wave border, the motif repeated in bands at the waist, sleeves, and skirt, lg. 54 in.
Provenance: Purchased in Beijing at the turn of the century when the current owner's grandmother was stationed at the Princeton University Alumni organized YMCA outpost, as reported in The Princeton Alumni Weekly, Vol. XIV No. 18, February 11, 1914.
