Description:

Relics from the U.S.S. Maine, c. 1898, a white-painted canvas life ring, with black-painted block lettering which reads MAINE; a clinometer salvaged from the Maine; and a piece of an exploded shell recovered from the Maine.

Provenance: The collection of the Valley Forge Historical Society.

Note: The lot includes a copy of an original receipt for the purchase of the life ring from Bannermans, dated 1926, as well as loan documents, stating that the items were at the U.S. Naval Academy from 1954 to 1988.

Life ring is in good condition, clinometer was purportedly broken during the explosion, and the shell casing has burst.
