Pewter Fluid Lamp Base with Memorial Engraving, America, early 19th century, the columnar top with molded foot on a stepped slightly canted square valanced base, decorated allover with engraved and wrigglework borders and stars, the four panels of the base depicting a cannon, crossed flags, a Union shield, and the initials "BB" over the date 1863 flanked by leafy sprigs, (imperfections),ht. 6 3/4, wd. 3 1/4, dp. 3 1/4 in.
Note: This pewter lamp base, now used as a candlestick, is thought to have been engraved by its owner, in memory of a Union soldier with the initials B.B. killed during the Civil War in 1863, possibly at Gettysburg.
