Description:

Richard La Barre Goodwin (American, 1840-1910)

Two Paintings of Hanging Woodcocks
One signed "R La B. Goodwin" l.r., the other signed and dated "R. La Barre Goodwin/
1888" l.r.
Both oil on canvas, sight sizes to 19 5/8 x 14 5/8 in. (50.0 x 37.5 cm), framed.
Condition: Both mounted on wood composition board, old retouch, surface grime.

Provenance: A private New Mexico collection.
Estimate $4,000-6,000

Each with a label from A.P.F., Inc., Framemakers and Conservators, New York City, on the frame backing boards.

There is minor old retouch to the backgrounds of both works. It does not affect the birds themselves, and is very subtle. The most noticeable area is on the painting with the tan breasted woodcock (rather than the whiter one), where there is a line of retouch after the shadow cast by the nail. This area just appears slightly more mat than the rest of the background.
