French School, 17th Century Style

Birth of Venus
Unsigned.
Oil on metal, 27 1/8 x 34 in. (68.6 x 86.7 cm), mounted to wooden cradling, unframed.
Condition: Retouch, paint losses, craquelure, scattered abrasions, surface grime.

Provenance: From a home located at 49 Beacon Street, Boston, Massachusetts, to the current owner.
Estimate $1,500-2,000

There are losses (some retouched) at the sites of the nail holes. There are minor scattered surface abrasions without losses. There are at least two campaigns of retouch. The older is primarily broad glazes to the sky. The more recent is conscentrations of sketch-like strokes within the figures - primarily to the drapery. The work might benefit from cleaning.
