Attributed to Bartholomeus van der Helst (Dutch, 1613-1670)
Portrait of an Admiral
Unsigned, identified on a partial label affixed to the stretcher.
Oil on canvas, 49 1/4 x 40 1/4 in. (125.0 x 102.0 cm), framed.
Condition: Punctures, abrasions, lined, old retouch, craquelure, surface grime.
The lining is an old glue lining. There are at least two campaigns of retouch both scattered dashes and strokes; much of this is to the curtain. There is bloom and mold growth to the surface, and the varnish is farely opaque. There are a number of surface abrasions with corresponding paint loss, primarily to the bottom third of the composition. There are also several punctures, the largest of which is about the size of a silver dollar in the center left within the curtain.
