Madonna and Child in an Interior
Oil on panel, 6 3/4 x 7 in. (17.0 x 17.8 cm), framed.
Condition: Scattered retouch, pentimenti, fine craquelure, minor surface grime.
Provenance: From a private Maine collection.
Retouch consisting of many small dots throughout Mary's face and drapery and to the body of the Christ Child. Dots of retouch also to the background. Retouch around the perimeter of the panel, which could suggest that there was once an engaged frame.
Small loss to panel (1/8 x 1/4 inch, 0.3 x 0.7 cm) at u.r corner. Panel is not beveled. Wood is of a tight grain, not oak, perhaps a fruitwood. Suggestions of pentimento at left side of Mary's robe and also at her thumb and pinkie finger of her right hand. Possible monogram (?) or lettering on the front of the vase l.r. and on the gold clasp of the book on the u.l. Possible fading to the blue pigments. Mary wears a green undergarment. Spiky halos could possibly be a later addition. Possible strengthening of the outline of the Christ Child's fingers on his right hand. Fine craquelure overall.
