Paint-decorated Poplar Document Box, probably New York, 19th century, the rectangular top with chamfered edges above the shallow box, original surface painted to simulate black marble, the inside of the top with extensive pen and ink drawn decoration of paper scrolls, birds, and leafage, and signed and dated "James B Newcomb/Pitch 1845," (minor wear),ht. 4 1/2, wd. 12, dp. 10 1/2 in.
