Cook's third voyage contains the disturbing story of his own death in Hawaii on the fourteenth of February, 1779. After the Hawaiians stole a small boat from the English, tensions between the two groups were palpably high. Cook's attempt to resolve the problem by taking Kalani'o-pu'u, the King of Hawaii, as a hostage failed miserably. A group of Hawaiians surrounded the English, killing Cook and several other sailors in his party. (3)
