Description:

Charles Herbert Woodbury (American, 1864-1940)

Portrait of a Young Woman Reading
Signed "Charles H. Woodbury" l.l., inscribed and dated "Charles H.
Woodbury/1922" on a cradle bar on the reverse. Oil on canvas, 30 x 24 in., framed.
Condition: Canvas trimmed and laid down onto cradled Masonite, surface grime.

Provenance: Gifted to Thomas McLaughlin, Brookline, Massachusetts, in 1948 from the home of a Mrs. Perkins, Perkins Street, Brookline, Massachusetts, then by family descent to the current owner. The sitter is thought to be a member of the family of Isabel Weld Perkins.
Estimate $1,000-1,500

There is old retouch - mostly strokes and broad glazes - including some to the face. There is scattrered craquelure, but it is stable. The work would benefit from cleaning.
