Portrait of Captain Benjamin Thistle, Beverly, Massachusetts. Signed and dated "M. Van Doort 1825" l.l. Oil on canvas, the subject wears a navy blue topcoat, yellow vest and frilled white shirt, in front of a wavy sea, rising sun, pink horizon, and clouded sky, 29 x 25 1/2 in., in a molded gilt gesso frame. Condition: Scattered retouch, especially to two areas of background.
Provenance: Malcolm S. Burroughs, Topsfield, Massachusetts.
Note: A label attached to the back of the frame reports that Captain Thistle was master of the ship Sooloo, of Salem.
