Summer Entrance to a Shrine, Possibly the Zeniarai Benzaiten Ugafuku Shrine
Unsigned, inscribed "Summer (Entrance of a small town/...or Temple" in the artist's
hand, in pencil and with two label fragments from Foster Brothers (3 Park Square),Boston, on the reverse.
Watercolor and graphite on paper, sheet size 13 1/8 x 19 1/2 in. (33.3 x 49.5 cm),framed.
Condition: Foxing, acid burn, toning.
Provenance: According to the inscription on the reverse, believed to be John Lowell (1919-2011) to his brother James Hale Lowell 2d (b. 1938) [sons of Ralph Lowell (1890-1978),descended from Mary Emlen Hale (1863-?) and John Lowell (1856-1922) of Boston].

The toning is gentle and even; any fading is subtle. The fox marks are scatterd throughout the composition (see images). The staining is visible primarily to the verso.
