affixed to the backing.
Oil on canvas, 28 x 40 in. (71.1 x 101.6 cm),framed.
Condition: Lined, retouch, craquelure.

Provenance: Sotheby's Arcade, American 19th and 20th Century Paintings, Drawings and Sculpture, September 22, 1987, Sale 1214, Lot 92.
Estimate $2,500-3,500

The lining is adhered with wax. There is a long narrow band of retouch just above the horizon on the left side of the composition plus additional scattered dots and dashes of retouch. The craquelure is stable. The scene is purportedly a view of Newburyport, Massachusetts, from Old Point Road on Plum Island.
