Jules Dupré (French, 1811-1889)
Signed "...upré" l.l., identified on a presentation plaque.
Oil on canvas, 12 x 16 1/4 in. (30.5 x 41.0 cm), framed.
Condition: Lined, skinning, retouch, surface grime.
N.B. We would like to thank Cabinet Michel Rodrigue for their assistance cataloging this work based on their review of digital photographs. The work at hand is one of several studies for the painting La petite charrette of 1860 shown at the Louvre.
Wax lined onto a rigid support. Retouch is ambiguous under UV light, especially in the darker areas of the canvas due to varnish layer. There appears to be an area of retouch in the sky in the u.l. corner measuring about 1-1/2 x 1 inch and an area of discolored varnish in u.c. Skinning is possible in the darkest areas, including the signature itself which is abraded. However, it is possible that these dark areas were also thinly painted originally in this study. Fine, stable craquelure. Two small raised areas, hard to the touch, perhaps mounting bubbles, to the surface of the reverse.
