Harold E. "Doc" Edgerton (American, 1903-1990)

Seeing the Unseen: Twelve Photographs by Harold Edgerton, 1934-73, printed 1977, edition of 60. All numbered and signed "22/60 HAROLD EDGERTON" in graphite on the verso. Seven gelatin silver prints and five dye transfer prints with frontispiece in a black portfolio case, image sizes to 13 7/8 x 10 15/16 in. (35.3 x 27.8 cm),matted, unframed.
Condition: Unmounted, prints hinged with archival Filmoplast P tape, several with very minor handling crimps.

N.B. Described by National Geographic as "the man who made time stand still," Harold "Doc" Edgerton was an engineer and scientist who developed a strobe flash that enabled him to photographically freeze the motion of a tennis player hitting a ball, a bullet piercing an apple, and other high speed actions such as those represented in this portfolio. The titles of the individual photographs are as follows: Shock Waves from Impact (c. 1965); A Girl and Her Horse (1941); Action at the Rodeo (1940); Tennis Serve (1952); Football Placement Kick (1934); Swirls and Eddies of a Tennis Stroke (1939); Golf Drive by Densmore Shute (1938); Splash of a Milk Drop (1957); Vortex at a Fan Blade Tip (1973, with Kim Vandiver); Pole Vaulter, David Tork (1964); Cutting the Playing Card Quickly (c. 1964); and Bullet and Apple (c. 1964).
