Day's End/Shepherd with Sheep in a Panoramic Landscape. Unsigned. Oil on panel, 10 1/4 x 14 1/4 in., in a period frame. Condition: Craquelure, curvature to the support.
Estimate $600-800
Panel backed with rough canvas. Fine craquelure to surface in a predominantly vertical orientation. Panel with warping and uneven thickness ranging from about 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch. Because of the warping, the work does not sit evenly in the frame, leaving a gap at the top. Minor areas of retouch in the tree at the u.l. with a line of broken brush strokes measuring 5 inches across and located 1-1/2 inches down from the top of the panel. Possible old retouch as well to the tree trunk and to the branch at the left. There is the suggestion of further retouch in the foreground behind the sheep, however the fluorescence there is muted and may simply be the reflection of the brown pigment.
