N.B. Lots 638 to 641 date to Tatarcyzk's early period. He created his Gates series between 1984-1985, which was inspired both by the countryside landscape around Miecmierzu on the Vistula River as well as Caspar David Friedrich's The Cemetary Gate (1825-30) (1). In all four works, Tatarczyk abstracts an A-frame form to reference secular and sacred structures and evoke a feeling of the commonplace and exalted.
Tatarczyk attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, studying under Jan Tarasin (Polish, 1926-2009) (2). He has participated in a number of one-man and group shows at the venerable Galeria Foksal in Warsaw, as well as the Moderna Museet in Stockholm and Muzeum Narodowe in Warsaw. He is the recipient of numerous grants and residencies, including most recently the Rockefeller Foundation Scholarship in Bellagio, Italy. (3)
