Condition: Patch reinforcements, retouch, craquelure, abrasions, surface grime.

The painting is lined with a very old, coarse-weave canvas resembling burlap. There are several patch reinforcements to the reverse. Substantial areas of retouch, the major ones on and around the figure as follows: a vertical line measuring 13 x 1-1/2 inches running from the edge of the saint's neck to the middle of his abdomen; a 1-1/2 x 1" area on his right elbow; an area measuring 1-1/4 x 3 inches beneath the figure's left armpit. There are multiple areas of retouch around the edges of the canvas, with major areas as follows: a T-shaped area measuring 4 in. high and 8-1/2 in. across at u.c. about 3 inches down from the top; at the c.l. edge (4 x 6-1/2 in,) and at the l.r. edge (3-1/2 x 3-1/2 in.) Abrasions with paint losses to l.l. quadrant. Horizontal fold or seam across the width of the canvas located 17 in. up from the bottom of the frame. Craquelure overall with minute paint losses. Surface grime.
