N.B. Egisto Rossi was an artist, collector, and dealer in Old Master drawings. He is known to have made copies and "creative adaptations" of Old Master drawings, sometimes for nefarious purposes. He trained as an artist under the Italian sculptor Lorenzo Bartolini (1777-1850). An informative essay on Egisto Rossi's activity as a forger of drawings was written by Roberta J.M. Olson and published by the Master Drawings Association in 1982. (Master Drawings, Vol. 20, NO. 2 [Summer, 1982], pp. 149-156+202-213)
Watermark on sheet consists of a fleur de lis topped by a crown, with a pendant below. The capital letter E appears separately within the sheet, as does another character resembling an R.
The window mat is inscribed "Andrea Del Sarto/1486-1531" l.c.
