Barbara Morgan (American, 1900-1992)

Pearl Primus--Speak to Me of Rivers, 1944, printed later. Titled and dated in ink below the image, copyright stamp in ink on verso l.c., inscribed "BM7166" in pencil on verso l.r. Gelatin silver print, 13 1/4 x 17 1/2 in. (33.7 x 44.5 cm),unmatted, unframed.
Condition: Unmounted, scattered handling crimps.

Provenance: A private collection, New York.

N.B. Pearl Primus (1919-1994) was a dancer, choreographer, and anthropologist who promoted the study and performance of African dance. In 1944, she choreographed a work to Langston Hughes's famous poem "The Negro Speaks of Rivers."
