Quarter-plate Daguerreotype of a Young Woman, stamped "J GURNEY" AND "349 BROADWAY" on brass mat l.l. and l.r., respectively, scratched indistinctly "James L ..." in the plate l.c.
Condition: Tarnish with some spotting, case worn and abraded at edges, cover missing, not examined out of case.
Provenance: A private New England collection.
N.B. To have a daguerreotype signed by the operator who made the portrait is very unusual. The name inscribed in the plate may be that of James Forbes, who worked for Gurney at his New York studio around 1855.
