Description:

Cocked Hat with Painted Tin Case, c. late 18th/early 19th century, a natural felt body covered with cloth to imitate a beaver hat body, silk grosgrain ribbon around the border of the leaves, and a painted tin case, the outside with a reddish japanned base, with black designs, and a carry handle, inside is a reddish japanning, with a 1783 dated tax document to Colonel Jeremiah Mason, box ht. 5 1/4, lg. 14 1/2, wd. 16 in.

Note: Colonel Jeremiah Mason was born in Connecticut on February 21st, 1730, and died April 16th, 1813. He commanded a company during the Siege of Boston, was promoted to Colonel in 1776, and commanded Fort Trumbull. This may have been a hat he wore later in life.

Hat is missing its liner and has wear to the grosgrain ribbon, hat box is in excellent condition with only minor paint loss.
