Model 1842 Springfield with 9th Massachusetts Identification, c. 1849, walnut stock, carved on the left side of the butt J.Mc.G. 9th MASS./C.K 9thMV, with a light cartouche near the sideplate, on the right side of the butt is carved a small A.N., steel fittings, tail of the lockplate marked SPRING/FIELD/1849, barrel lg. 42, overall lg. 58 in.
Note: With this musket is a note that reads "THIS MUSKET CARRIED AND USED BY:/JOHN MC GOWAN, CO "K" 9TH MASS VOL. FROM 1862-1864./BORN IN SCOTLAND, ENLISTED 25 AUG '62 AT AGE 43./OCCUPATION GARDENER, RESIDENCE BOSTON. MUSTERED/ IN 25 AUG '62 FOR 2 YRS. WOUNDED 5 MAY '64 AT/ WILDERNESS, VA. MUSTERED OUT 21 JUNE 1864."
