Note: Thomas Francis Meagher was an Irish nationalist and leader of a rebellion in Ireland, and served time for sedition in Australia until he escaped and came to America where he studied law and became a journalist. Meagher joined the U.S. Army at the beginning of the American Civil War, and rose to the rank of brigadier general. He was most notable for recruiting and leading the Irish Brigade, and encouraging support among Irish immigrants for the Union.
