Signed and dated "Eric Pape 98" in pencil l.r., estate stamped "Eric Pape" and
identified on a label affixed to the backing.
Watercolor on paper, sight size 18 3/4 x 12 3/4 in. (47.6 x 32.4 cm),framed.
Condition: Not examined out of frame.

Literature: Lew Wallace, The Fair God: A Tale of the Conquest of Mexico (Houghton Mifflin, 1898),pp. 231-2 (illus.).

N.B. The present work depicts the following scene in The Fair God: "For the 'tzin!' shouted the hunter, striking back before the other half recovered. The shield was dashed aside; a groan acknowledged a wound in the breast, and Iztil' staggered; another blow stretched him on the pavement. A stream of blood, black in the night, stole slowly over the flags. The fight was over."
