Russian Iconostasis Icon Depicting the Mother of God of Galatea, Moscow School, late 19th century, the Hodigitria-type icon with the Virgin holding Christ in one arm, while Christ holds a globus cruciger and raises his hand in blessing, polychrome painted to a gilded ground, 43 1/2 x 31, in a later giltwood frame, 53 1/4 x 41 in.
N.B. The original icon is in the Church of St. Tikhon in Moscow.
Age-typical surface wear. Loss with inpainting to Virgin's forehead and hand. Patches and loss to gilt ground. Loss to panel in lower left corner. Panel not warped and painted white to the reverse. Figures may have originally had metal halos.
