Chinese School, 19th Century
Three Portraits of Ships in Chinese Coastal Waters. Unsigned. Oil on canvas, 9 3/4 x 12 1/4 in., in period painted molded wood frames. Condition: Relined, scattered retouch primarily to background.

All three paintings are relined, they all have some degree of stable craquelure, all the frames have been repainted and the liners have been painted with gold-colored paint.
1. ship w/sails furled, flying British flags heading left- Retouch to u.l. and u.r. corner, triangular sky area on center mast (shows darker in color),and a line along side of the lower center mast, few areas on right edge, and a few minor spots along left side. Joinery is loose on the mitered lower rt. and left corners.
2. ship with sails unfurled heading left- sparsely scattered small spots of retouch to sky at u.l., u.c., and u.r.; another liner was added to the frame.
3. ship with sails unfurled heading right- scattered retouch to sky at u.l. corner, sky around the very top of front and center masts, 1 1/4 x 1/3 in area on bow of ship, 1 1/2 x 1 in. area in sky above the jibs at the front of the vessel.
