Description:

Set of Eight Chippendale Carved Walnut Dining Chairs, Philadelphia, c. 1760-80, with serpentine cresting centering the carved shell, above vasiform splat and raking stiles, trapezoidal slip seats, on frontal cabriole legs ending in stockinged trifid feet, and rounded rear raked legs joined by a cutout seat frame, (minor imperfections and repairs, one chair of later date),ht. 39 1/2, seat ht. 17 1/2 in.

subtle differences in carving and size, slip seats have plywood added to underside, yellow pine seat frames still there; detailed condition: 1- stiles patched on outside edge about 8 inches down, left part of crest with patch where stile meets, extra pins in front at seat frame, 2 1.5-inch patches to molded edges of seat rail, 2-extra pin added at seat rail/stile, glue blocks replaced, right front return replaced, 3- added screws to rear glue blocks, splat patched, 4-inside of right stile with long thin patch near crest, small patch to splat top, glue bocks replaced, crack at bottom of right stile, 5- a reproduction, splat split and repaired at back top, 6- small patch to terminal tip, inscribed inside seat rail "MC", 7-missing glue block, splat possibly patched at convex edges below scroll tips, 8- missing glue block, left front leg with crack in frame, inside of seat rail inscribed "MC".
