Description:
Needlework Sampler, "Sarah Elizabeth Harris Aged 11, 1864," probably England, stitched with silk threads on a wool gauze ground, depicting rows of alphabets interspersed with pious verses, baskets of flowers and butterflies, and an assortment of borders over, the lower register depicting Adam and Eve and the knowledge of good and evil tree with encircling serpent flanked by trees, birds, crowns, and a stag, enclosed in a scallop/spearhead border, (fading, toning, scattered losses to background),approx. 16 1/2 x 12 1/2 in., in a period, black-painted, molded wood frame.
