Sterling Silver Tea and Coffee Service, New York, 1873-85, most pattern 5960, kettle on stand pattern 6176, each with undulating rim above squat body decorated with lobes and stylized flower petals, one side with applied heraldic crest, the other with applied "SAB" monogram, on paw feet, inscribed "A Wedding Gift to Sophia Augusta Brown From her Mother October 7th 1885" to underside, a kettle on stand with burner, ht. 13, coffeepot, teapot, covered sugar, and creamer and waste bowl with gold-washed interiors, approx. 284.9 troy oz.
Provenance: By family decent from Sophia Augusta Brown Sherman (1867-1947),daughter of John Carter Brown II (1797-1874) and Sophia Augusta Browne Brown (1825-1909) and the wife of William Watts Sherman (1842-1912),to the present owner.

All with age-typical usage wear (light surface abrasions and small nicks) and scattered small specks of black silver rot. Several pieces with narrow unobtrusive bands of light corrosion to undersides (it is very subtle, there is no discoloration, but it has a slight texture). Teapot: dent to underside, visible seam to handle. Kettle stand: visible seams. Coffeepot: visible seam to handle. The stated weight is accurate.
