Description:

14kt Gold Charm-mounted Cigarette Case, the line-engraved case with twenty-seven gold, silver, and enamel charms including a Chesterfield cigarette box, can-can dancer, telegram, race horse, cameraman, Santa Claus, and "ants in the pants," 104.4 dwt, 4 x 3 in.

Provenance: Jules Mastbaum, Philadelphia. Mastbaum (1872-1926) was a Philadelphia entrepreneur who made his fortune in the movie theatre business. While visiting Paris in the 1920s, he discovered the work of Rodin when he saw a bronze "Hand" sculpture in a shop window and became obsessed. He began collecting extensively and eventually bought casts directly from the Musee Rodin in Paris. He would go on to establish the Rodin Museum in Philadelphia, one of the defining icons of the city, and the most comprehensive public collections of Rodin's work outside Paris.
