Description:

William III Large Sterling Silver Tankard, London, 1696-97, maker's mark partially rubbed, possibly for Benjamin Pyne, of typical form, the domed and hinged cover with gadrooned edge, with bifurcated thumbpiece and scrolled handle, the tapered cylindrical body engraved with the arms of Wentworth within a garter motto reading "Hon Soit Qui Mal Y Pense," and flanked by a lion and a griffin standing on a ribband inscribed "En Dieu Est Tout," on flared foot with further gadrooning, ht. 16 1/2 in., approx. 93.5 troy oz.

N.B. This tankard was made soon after the death of William Wentworth, Baron Raby and 2nd Earl of Strafford (1641-1695). His nephew, Thomas Watson-Wentworth (1665-1725),succeeded him immediately as Baron Raby, and in 1711 as 3rd Earl of Strafford.
Estimate $18,000-22,000

Age-typical wear. Foot warped so that it wobbles slightly. Handle may have been removed at one time. Possible repair to the foot. The solder was crudely done and it is possible the foot was flattened at one time and reformed.
