Oil on canvas, 28 1/8 x 47 7/8 in. (71.5 x 121.5 cm),stretched with Boston tabs on a Frost and Adams stretcher, in a period frame.
Condition: Losses, craquelure, accretions, surface grime.

Provenance: Gift of a Boston, Massachusetts, attorney to Mr. Leo Deuterio, Brighton, Massachusetts, c. 1950, to the current owner by family descent.

Inscribed "near sun set/viewof Capri. Island of Capri/near Naples.Vesuvius in/the Distance/painted by Geo. L. Brown/1876-7.8" on the reverse c.r., and inscribed "Do not varnish/it will crack" on the reverse c.l.

Two areas of paint loss located at lower center edge, 16 inches in from the left corner, the larger loss measuring 3 x 1/2 in. and the smaller area 1 x 1/4 in. Craquelure overall, with shrinking craquelure to the sky. Varnish inconsistencies, surface grime.
