The lining is old, probably 19th century, and is adhered with glue, and the verso shows solvent or similar staining from a previous cleaning. There are areas of loss throughout the work. Some of these have been filled and/or retouched. The surface seems stable at present in spite of the losses and craquelure. The condition suggests that the painting spent some time off of its stretcher at some point and may have been rolled. Generally the painting is not badly abraded for a work of its age, but there are some areas of abrasion, including the following: in the center of the work covering part of the building and the tall masts (about 2 x 3 in.); in the sky along the tops of the buildings on the left; and lower left beneath the figure in red.
