American School, 19th Century

Pair of Portraits of Mr. Daniel Spraker and His Wife Eliza. Unsigned. Oil on canvas, 30 x 24 in., in original molded painted wood frames. Condition: Relined, scattered retouch.

Provenance: Family descent to Peter Tillou, Litchfield, Connecticut, May 1980, then to the consignor.

Note: Daniel Spraker was born August 26, 1798 in Palatine, Montgomery County, New York, the fourth child of eight born to Joseph Spraker (1765-1848) and Catherine (Fraser) Spraker (c. 1768-1866). Daniel married Eliza Dykeman (1807-c. 1847),about 1828 and together they had seven children.

Scattered retouch to both figures and backgrounds,
Daniel- about 10% of head and face has scattered spots of retouch, and scattered spots to clothing and background.
Eliza - about 15% of head and face has scattered spots of retouch, afew spots on dress, and numerous areas of retouch to background.
