Roswell Tenny Smith (New Hampshire, 1825-1901)

Six Portraits of Three Generations of the Hutchinson/Loveland Families of Norwich,Vermont. One portrait signed "R.S." u.l., all but one of the subjects are identified with their ages and 1846 date in inscriptions, likely in the artist's hand, on the back of the canvases. Oil on canvas, painted by Roswell T. Smith, an itinerant painter of Hanover, New Hampshire, depicting Jerome Hutchinson (1763-1848),his wife Content Smith Hutchinson (1764-1858),their two daughters Fanny Hutchinson (1788-1858) and Sarah Hutchinson Loveland (1793-1877),Sarah's husband William Loveland (1784-1862),and Sarah and William's son Joseph Talcott Loveland (1818-1889),five measuring approx. 28 x 24, one 27 x 22 in., the portraits of Jerome and Content in molded walnut frames, the others unframed. Condition: All with varying degrees of retouch and craquelure.

Note: According to A History of Norwich Vermont, M.E. Goddard and Henry V. Partridge, Dartmouth Press, 1901, Jerome Hutchinson was born in Ashford, Connecticut, in 1863 (notably, his father John Hutchinson died at Valley Forge). His family moved to the Norwich area of Vermont in 1765. He married Content Smith, and they had six children. One of his daughters, Fanny (b. 1788) married William Loveland, who succeeded in farming his father's (Joseph Loveland) homestead and was involved in town and state legislature. Their oldest son, Joseph Talcott, also followed in agricultural pursuits and, "of strict integrity, he was honored with trusts, both public and private, including four elections to the [state] legislature." He kept up the homestead until his death in 1889. The Loveland homestead, built in 1792, still stands in Norwich, Vermont, and the remains of several of the Hutchinson and Loveland families are buried in the Meeting House and Fairview cemeteries in Norwich.

A binder of detailed information about the family and the artist, compiled by a previous owner of the portraits, accompanies the lot.

-Content Hutchinson-minor retouch to a few spots on forehead, cheeks, chin, bodice and sleeve, and a few areas to background,stable craquelure.
-Fanny Hutchinson- Minor scattered retouch to subject's face, hair, dress, and background, stable craquelure.
-Sarah Hutchinson Loveland-minor retouch to upper and lower edges, minor specks to face and dress, and a few spots to background, stable craquelure.
-William Loveland- retouch to scattered areas on face, more-so on left side, scattered areas to jacket more-so on sleeve and lower right areas, and scattered spots to background.
-Joseph Loveland- 2 1/2 in. abraided line of paint loss to right of head, minor retouch to a few spots on left forehead and eye pupil; retouch around the edges and a few spots to the background.
