Condition: Lined, retouch, craquelure, surface grime.

Heavily varnished and craquelure overall. Difficult to read condition under UV light due to varnish and probable multiple campaigns of restoration. Most recent retouch shown to the foreground rocks at l.l. with a indistinct 3 inch horizontal line, dots to fill craquelure around the figure of Mary, dots to retouch to sky, the largest measuring 1/4 in. diameter; dots to Joseph's cloak. Skinning primarily to background. Surface imperfections, perhaps old paint losses or mold, beneath the varnish layer. Lining is recent.

Inscribed in a late hand in pen, "Rest on the Flight into Egypt [crossed out]/Rest on the Return from Egypt/Anonymous Italian artist/late 17th century - early 18th" on the stretcher bar at u.l.
