Description:

Quarter-plate Tintype Portrait of a Young Soldier, the soldier identified in incised inscriptions on the back of the tintype: "John S. Kenyon/18 years old/War of 1860-1862/Third New York Cavelry [sic]," in a brown "Lyre in Arched Portal" (Krainik 45) Union case, (mat scratches, minor scratch u.l.).

Note: John S. Kenyon was born in Schoharie County, New York, on May 5, 1843. He enlisted as a volunteer, joining Company D, Third New York Cavalry when he was 18 years old, and the age when this portrait was taken. He rose in rank to Second Lieutenant, was made a member of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion for distinguished bravery, and awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. After military service he went on to have a flour business, and later served in the Republican Party as a clerk in various state senate positions from 1880-96; he was the Secretary of the Board of Railroad Commissioners, Secretary of the Republican State Committee, and Secretary of the Republican State Conventions from 1891-95. He died in Syracuse, New York, February 16, 1902, at the age of 58.
