Description:

Woman's Kesi Dragon Robe, China, Qing Dynasty (1644-1912),woven with eight dragons pursuing flaming pearls amidst clouds, bats, and the eight Buddhist emblems, against a warm blue ground decorated with ruyi motifs interspersed with the wan symbol and stylized lotus blossoms, a ninth dragon on the underflap, all above a lishui border with sea dragons and other auspicious emblems emerging out of the rolling waves; the collar and cuffs woven with lotuses, peonies, chrysanthemums, and lingzhi on a black ground, the cream silk sleeve bands embroidered in Peking knot stitch with figures at leisure in gardens, 57 x 56 in.

Provenance: From the estate of Richard Young, Van Hornesville, New York. This collection originally belonged to his stepmother, Louise Powis Brown Young, who had amassed the textiles during the first quarter of the 20th century.
