Thomas Birch (American, 1779-1851)
The U.S. Frigate United States versus Macedonia in the War of 1812. Unsigned, inscribed "#5 D7713..." in crayon on the stretcher, identified on a presentation plaque and on a typed label affixed to the backing, with a label from Closson Galleries, Cincinnati, Ohio, affixed to the backing. Oil on canvas, 24 1/2 x 32 in., framed. Condition: Lined, craquelure, varnish inconsistencies.

Craquelure overall. Small areas of lifting at left center edge, with three small spots of cleavage within an area of craquelure measuring 4 inches high and 1 in wide. Under UV light there appears to be scattered dashes of retouch to the water, one area measuring 5 inches across and 1 1/4 inches high at its extreme height located beneath the ship on the right. A second area is located lower center, 3 inches up from the frame liner, and measures 2 x 1 inches. Other retouch in scattered brush marks throughout the water. Retouch in the sky, top center, in the darkest hues of the cloud.
