Description:

Edmund Charles Tarbell (American, 1862-1938)

Study for My Children in the Woods
Unsigned, identified on the back of a photo of the work inscribed by Mary Tarbell
Schaffer.
Oil on canvas, 19 1/8 x 15 in. (48.5 x 38.0 cm), framed.
Condition: Lined, minor paint losses, craquelure, surface grime.

N.B. This study depicts the artist's daughter Mary at age 14. The finished version of My Children in the Woods, 1911, formerly in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, is now in a private collection. A 4 1/4 x 3 3/8 inch photograph of the work at hand, inscribed on the back by Mary Tarbell Schaffer, accompanies the lot.
Estimate $2,500-3,500

The lining is adhered with wax, and there may be a solid support sandwiched between the old and new canvases. There are several tiny losses (probably pre-dating the lining). There is scattered but stable craquelure. The work might benefit from a gentle cleaning. The full inscription on the back of the photograph reads, "Study for My Children/in the Woods in New/Castle N.H. 19 x 15/by my Father/Edmund C. Tarbell/his daughter/Mary Tarbell Schaffer/To the Barlow's/1975"
