Venice, Noonday on the Riva, 1896
Signed and dated "Walter F. Lansil. 1896" l.r., titled, signed, and dated "...Walter
F. Lansil. 1896" on the reverse, with a partial label from the Boston Art Club (see below) affixed to the stretcher.
Oil on canvas, 22 x 36 1/2 in. (55.9 x 92.7 cm),stretched with Boston tabs, in a Walfred Thulin (1878-1949) Arts & Crafts frame.
Condition: Retouch, craquelure, surface grime.

Provenance: Descended within a Massachusetts family.

Exhibitions: Boston Art Club, January 5 to February 2, 1901, no. 65.

Frame incised "19 WT 39 #3210 Thulin" on the reverse.

Drying cracks to l.l quadrant, with probable retouch in this area in the water and shadows of the building and vessel. Pigment variations to sky, which could be accentuated by old yellowed varnish. Probable broadly brushed retouch to sky. Small paint loss c.r. to right of the tower. Overall craquelure more pronounced in the center near the red sail and flag at right.
