Description:

John George Brown (American, 1831-1913)

Daisy
Inscribed and signed "Copyright/J.G. Brown N.A." l.l., titled and inscribed on an
unidentified, partial label affixed to the stretcher.
Oil on canvas, 30 1/8 x 20 1/4 in. (76.5 x 51.5 cm),framed.
Condition: Minor retouch, fine craquelure.

N.B. The painting at hand, inscribed "Daisy" above what appears to be "J.G. Brown N.A." on an unidentified, partial label on the stretcher, is almost certainly the work exhibited under this same title at the Autumn Exhibition at the National Academy of Design, New York, November 19 - December 15, 1888 (cat. no. 362). The catalogue listed the price as $1,000. The work is described in a New York Times review of the exhibition, "The Autumn Academy," (Nov. 19, 1888, p. 4) as a "smiling girl of ten with hard-painted face, a bluish dress very nicely wrought, and bare feet and hands skillfully painted. The sunny background is nicely painted in." The San Francisco Chronicle of December 16, 1888 (p. 14),also references Brown's Daisy as "a sketch of a child sitting on a fence" and reported it sold for $1,000. Copyright records of the Library of Congress for 1888 list a painting titled Daisy, measuring 30 x 20 inches, registered in December. In the summer of 1888, Brown was working in the Catskills, a likely locale for this subject. The painting is mentioned after the turn of the century in the American Art Annual, vol V, 1905-06, p. 52, which listed the sale of Daisy (30 x 20),from the collection of John Bannon, bought by M. Schinasi for $370, Feb 23-24, 1905.

We would like to thank Martha Hoppin for her kind assistance with cataloging this lot. For more information on the artist, please consult Martha Hoppin's book,The World of J.G. Brown (Chesterfield, Massachusetts: Chameleon Books, 2010).
Estimate $20,000-30,000

A 1/2 inch dash of retouch to l.r. corner at bottom edge. Possible retouch to strengthen shadows beneath the chin of the figure and to the folds of her dress at the crook of the right arm. Canvas is slightly slack on the stretcher and would benefit from re-keying.
