Signed "BARYE" within the cast by the tiger's back right foot, marked "F.
BARBEDIENNE.Fondeur." on the base behind the tiger's back left foot.
Bronze with dark green and brown patina, 8 3/8 x 16 1/4 x 4 in. (21.3 x 41.3 x 10.2 cm).
Condition: Minor surface grime, dust to interstices.

N.B. Following the Barbedienne Fondeur mark, the word "France" is incised faintly in the bronze in a smaller and lighter hand.

Stamped "21" on the underside of the base. The dimensions of the base, when measured from underneath, are 39.0 x 10.3 cm.

"Tigre qui Marche (sur plinthe)" was first editioned in 1841. The plaster is in the Walters Art Gallery in Baltimore. According to Michel Poletti's "Catalogue Raisonné des Bronzes Édités," 20 casts were sold between 1850 and 1857, with another 60 examples sold between 1857 and 1875. Most of the edition was sold by Barbedienne between 1875 and 1940. (Poletti, p. 197) The cast at hand is thought to be a posthumous cast from this later period.
