Josef Albers (German/American, 1888-1976)
Four Images: I-S Va 1, I-S Va 2, I-S Va 4, and I-S Va 5 from the I-S/SIX VARIANTSPortfolio, 1969, edition of 150, published by Ives-Sillman, Inc., New Haven (Danilowitz, 192.1, 2, 4 & 5). Each signed and dated "Albers'69" in pencil l.r., and titled and numbered "...141/150" in pencil l.r., two with the publisher's dry stamp l.r., two identified on a label from Graphics 1 and Graphics 2, Boston, on the backing. Color screenprints on paper, image sizes approximately 21 1/4 x 27 in. (53.9 x 70.1 cm),three framed, one shrink-wrapped.
Condition: Va 4 with unpressed crease to image, not examined out of frames or wrap.
I-S Va.4 (orange) when removed from shrink wrap displays an unpressed crease to c.r. extending from the margin approximately 8 inches at a descending angle within the image in the outer color block, right side; subtle rippling overall and mild handling creases, sheet with soiling to lower edge, with creasing and abrasion to lower left corner; drystamp l.r., identified on the Graphics 1 and Graphics 2 label affixed to shrink wrap; sheet size 28 x 36 in. (71.1 x 14.8 cm).
I-S Va1 (green) appears to have pale stain to top right margin measuring 1 x 1/2 inch, also a break to the glass in u.l. corner with possible stain beneath, break measuring 3/4 in. diagonally across the u.l. corner. Work is framed but not matted. Not examined out of frame.
I-S Va 2 (red) is matted and framed, and bears label from Graphics 1 and Graphics 2 on the frame backing. No visible condition issues to report. Not examined out of frame.
I-S Va (grey) is framed but not matted, bearing drystamp l.r., subtle staining to l.l. corner which does not affect the image, small area of foxing or dots of staining to l.r. in an area measuring 1 x 1-1/4 inch overall and extending slightly into the image to the left of the signature. Not examined out of frame.
