Brook Farm was a utopian community established by George Ripley and his wife Sophia in West Roxbury in the 1840s. This particular publication was inspired by the socialist Charles Fourier. Hawthorne, a founding member of Brook Farm, based his novel, The Blithedale Romance, on his experiences there. After a devastating fire, the farm ceased operations. By 1847, it was completely abandoned.
